The World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action (WABA) is a global network of individuals
& organisations concerned with the protection, promotion & support of breastfeeding worldwide.
WABA action is based on the Innocenti Declaration, the Ten Links for Nurturing the Future and the
Global Strategy for Infant & Young Child Feeding. WABA is in consultative status with UNICEF & an NGO
in Special Consultative Status with the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations (ECOSOC).

13. Humanitarian Assistance / Emergencies

The ability and support for a woman to breastfeed becomes even more critical in times of emergencies but often more difficult. These workshops focused on both the broader implications and specific situations of breastfeeding in times of emergencies.

I. Infant Feeding Emergencies: A Training Session, Helen Armstrong, IBCLC, UNICEF  New York, and Dr. Felicity Savage, Centre for International Health, UK, Facilitator

This was a training workshop. Participants learned about the latest training Modules on Infant Feeding in Emergencies and were introduced to parts of the training materials jointly developed by UNICEF, WHO, IBFAN, the LINKAGES project, Emergency Nutrition Network, UNHCR and WFP. It provided information about organizational and practical measures that humanitarian aid workers and health workers directly responsible for care of mothers and babies in emergency situation need to take to support mothers and/or caregivers in the most appropriate infant feeding practices.

II. Infant Feeding Emergencies: Experiences and Lessons Learned - Lida

In the first part of the workshop, three panelists shared their first-hand experiences:

Participants of this Workshop had an opportunity to share their own experiences with work in the area of infant feeding in emergency situations. They discussed challenges that breastfeeding faces in camps of refugee or internally displaced populations, the importance of monitoring infant feeding practices and ways of ensuring the compliances with the International Code in emergency situations when temporary feeding of breastmilk substitutes may need to be considered.
