As part of its action plan to facilitate and strengthen social mobilisation for breastfeeding, WABA envisioned a global unifying breastfeeding promotion strategy. The idea of a day's celebration was later turned into a week, which has become to be known as World Breastfeeding Week (WBW) - celebrated every 1-7 August to commemorate the Innocenti Declaration. World Breastfeeding Week was first celebrated in 1992, and now involves over 120 countries and is endorsed by UNICEF, WHO and FAO. More

The breastfeeding movement has come a long way, and today, the issue of breastfeeding transcends disciplines and the seeds have since sprouted and have roots in communities and international agencies alike. It was felt that it is time that the breastfeeding movement has its very own charter that clearly lays down our principles and reasons for us to support the breastfeeding cause. More

The Innocenti Declaration was produced and adopted by participants at the WHO/UNICEF policymakers' meeting on "Breastfeeding in the 1990s: A Global Initiative, co-sponsored by the United States Agency for International Development (A.I.D.) and the Swedish International Development Authority (SIDA), held at the Spedale degli Innocenti, Florence, Italy, on 30 July - 1 August 1990. The Declaration reflects the content of the original background document for the meeting and the views expressed in group and plenary sessions. More
