We are
mammals!
Almost grown Kangaroo nursing from its mother
Mammal is a word I've heard before.but marsupial!!! I've never heard of that!
Marsupials are mammals that carry their babies in a pouch that they have on their bodies, right after birth. That's what Kangaroos do, for example!
Cool! I never saw a marsupial in the Zoo!
That's because they live in Australia on the other side of the world and we don't have any in our city Zoo!
What did you learn about these marsupials?
The Kangaroo baby is in its mother's womb for just five weeks. When it is born it looks like a "larva" just an inch long, blind and with no hair. It immediately climbs into the mother's "pouch" and latches on to a nipple.
It just begins to let go of the mother after 4 months, but at the first sign of danger, it jumps back in. The baby leaves the pouch at around 9 months of age, but doesn't stop nursing before a year!
That's cool!
But the strangest thing is that Kangaroo's milk is pink!
