BREASTFEEDING: ADVOCACY AND PRACTICE COURSE
Optimal infant feeding practices could improve the health, growth, development and even survival of infants and young children. In May 2002 the World Health Assembly adopted a Global Strategy calling for governments to take action to improve Infant and Young Child Feeding. Even in countries in South East Asia where breastfeeding is common, exclusive breastfeeding of young babies is rare. Mixing breastfeeding with other foods and fluids negates the contraceptive effects of breastfeeding, lessens the health benefits for children, and may be a factor in transmission of HIV between mother and baby. This course updates and equips participants with skills and knowledge for the coordination of action on breastfeeding, training other health staff and acting as resource personnel or focal points on infant feeding.

The Breastfeeding: Advocacy and Practice course aims to equip participants with the skills and knowledge needed for such co-ordinated action on breastfeeding. It is based on the 3-week Breastfeeding: Practice and Policy Course (formerly 4-weeks in length) which is held annually at the Institute of Child Health in London, UK, and which is held in collaboration with WHO’s Department of Child and Adolescent Health and Development, and UNICEF’s Nutrition Section.

Course Aims:

  • To extend and up-date participants’ technical knowledge of lactation, and the evidence base of international policy recommendations on infant and young child feeding.
  • To develop participants’ capacity to implement policies and strategies to improve infant feeding in the South East Asian countries.
  • To enhance participants’ practical skills for working with mothers and babies, acting as resource personnel or focal points on infant feeding, and training others on breastfeeding.
